Rubbing the tips of your index finger and middle finger against the tip of your thumb seems to be a universal and cross cultural symbol for money. Where and how did this originate?

For clarification, I mean "the finger thing means the taxes" hand gesture.

Do that in Chinese society and people don't understand, unless they've seen it in movies. Put your forefinger and thumb together, like you're gesturing okay, but with your palm up: a coin, the Chinese gesture for money. So your gesture is not universal.
