My Grandfather was a Marine in WWII who saw combat at Guam and was present for the entire battle of Okinawa with the 6th Division. I remember him saying how surprised they were that there were really no reports of servicemen being killed by Japanese civilians or extreme factions of the military while occupying the home islands. Did this kind of thing happen and get covered up, or was the surrender really accepted by all of the Japanese on the home islands? I'm aware of the more famous holdouts who resisted throughout the Pacific for a few decades in certain cases, but were these mostly isolated incidents?
