How do history lectures in uni work?

by Shurikino123

Does the prof just stand there and read from a script or a presentation? Do you ever go to museums or stuff like that?

Depends on your lecturer, and the institution. Some lecturers will give a series of lectures (with more or less expert delivery and pace, usually less) and expect you to efficiently take summary notes and to ask questions on points you're unclear about. Such lectures may be followed by personal tutorials with the lecturer, at which you discuss your course reading and also your chosen essay topic - and how to tackle it in the word-count available to you.

Others may give you primary source material (historical evidence) and then expect you to come to class ready to discuss and evaluate it with the class, as they explain the historical context along the way. Some may even bring in historical artefacts. If you're really lucky you'll get an eccentric one who arrives in costume, and does the accent and even gets up on the table to re-enact scenes. Those sadly the eccentrics are rare these days, driven out by the duffers in HR.

Some may set 'group work' in class, in which small groups try to talk above the general hubub. In order to discuss something they know little about, and with fellow students who haven't even read the material. This, as you may suspect, does not usually go well. Though it is often required by university administrators, because they think the students 'like it'.

You may also encounter things like quizzes, to ensure the course material has been read.

Trips out are often difficult to organise for a single class, it's usually a whole year-group that goes, on two coaches. A student might expect one of these trips per semester, provided there are suitable places locally to visit.

With all respect to u/rationallyoptimistic's brutal and broadly accurate answer, the actual experience will vary a bit in different national contexts, and it may be worth specifying where you plan on (not) studying history.

Im planning on studying in scotland, Edinburgh or Glasgow.
