I've heard that Greek theater depicted Sappho as heterosexually promiscuous. Is this true and, if so, what was the context that surrounded this portrayal?

Well, we cannot know for certain, as none of the plays in which she is a character survived, though we know of several where she is the title character. It is worth nothing that all of the ones that we know of were comedies, which were often sexual and farcical. But there is no evidence of what she was portrayed as, given no texts survived.
