Ankara is a city with roots as long as the Hittie Empire. Known in ancient times as Ancyra and later Angora, being a commercial center from 18th century B.C.

It was the capital of the province during roman control, which built " Monumentum Ancyranum" which was like a temple with wall inscriptions about Augustus.

The city was taken by Ottomans in the 14th century, of course, and in 1402 the Timurids defeated them there and captured Bayezid I "the Thunderbolt", you know that guy who built the biggest army at the time to siege Constantinople and failed to do so, and who lost to a bunch of unexperienced force of Wallachians under Mircea the Elder, well lets get back to our subject.

In the 19th and 20th centuries Ankara's reputation and wealth went down and was just a city that was known for its export of "mohair".

There are a few reasons that Ankara was made the capital:

  • After the 1st World War the Entente controlled Instanbul and planned to make it the capital of the new republic, of which Ataturk didnt really agree and established his nationalistic government in Ankara as a new sign of breaking with the imperial past, and to signify a new reign.
  • The second would be that Instanbul, despite being an important city, was opened to attack from both water (i.e. Black Sea - Russia) and land (i.e. the opened fields north of Instanbul), while Ankara was right in the center of Anatolia, which was pretty hard to reach.

Despite this Ankara grew exponentially between 1920s-1960s
