Is there a reason religions and mythologies share so many overlapping stories?

Many of these situations are cases of cultural contact in which stories take on aspects of others. This obscures older tales that share single aspects, such as ressurection or a concepts of an afterlife, but are otherwise quite different. /u/tiako, /u/nientedenada, and I have discussed the question of flood myths here.
