Why did West African tribes such as the Ewe adopt a Hebrew alphabet and similar language when there seems to be no other links to the Hebrew people, and no obvious colonisation by them.

Are claims that the Ewe originate from the middle east verified? If so, how and when did so many sub saharan africans get to the middle east in the first place, and how did they make it to West Africa? Are there other similar tribes that settled along the way?

My girlfriend is Ewe and there doesn't seem to be an answer online. As a far as we can tell, they have never been colonised by Hebrew people, and aside from some coincidences with the name, they seem to have no links to Judaism (most are either Christian or Muslim).

Can you show me an example of their use of Hebrew alphabet? I was curious about it since I speak Hebrew, and searching google for "Ewe language" doesn't return any results with Hebrew letters. The Wikipedia page doesn't say anything about Hebrew as well.
