Is there a good book(or multi volume series) that provides a moderate depth overview of the history of civilization?

I really love history but am not really sure how to start getting into it. I can't really decide a specific section/era of history to focus on so I figured a medium depth overview spanning over a multi volume series would be a good idea to start with if a good one exists. Preferably not super dry as I am new to history. Also, if you have any recommendations for really interesting eras/civilizations in history you would suggest focusing on I would love to hear those as well. Thanks!

For the development of western civilisation 1500-1800 Braudels "Civilisation and Capitalism" series is great, and as an era of history there was really a lot going on, obviously.

Braudel also writes really well. The series is full of rich, detailed descriptions of life at all levels.

This is a general world history which we were given for our first year studies. I think it is exactly what you are looking for

I love The Story of Civilization by Will and Ariel Durant. It's an eleven-volume set covering Western history for the general reader. It was published between 1935-75, so is perhaps a little dated now, but it's a pleasure to read and will cover most of the bases. There's also a great audiobook version available too.

I'd also recommend Debt: The First 5000 Years by David Graebar. It's a polemical argument, but interesting, and it's got the scope you're looking for.

Another good one is The Silk Roads: A New History of the World by Peter Frankopan. It serves well as an introduction and because it centres itself on the Silk Road, it offers a different perspective on world history.

Although I have a particular love of Chinese history, I'd like to suggest that rather than going for a particular era or 'civilization', you consider a theme like the history of (a) religion.

I think a great one is Neil Macgregors Around the World in a Hundred objects.

It was a joint partnership between the BBC and the British Museum and it looks at important historical items from throughout history giving context to the item as well as going in depth into the item. It's great as it's not too long covers many cultures and will allow to identify your interests.
