The Great Fire of Smyrna that began on 13 September 1922 claimed up to 100,000 lives, mostly Greeks and Armenians, and essentially ended the land part of the Greco-Turkish War. Who is responsible for starting the fire? What made the fire so destructive?

Just a note that the "up to" is potentially doing a lot of work in the death toll. There are claims of anything from 2,000 to 100,000, so the latter is definitely on the higher end. I'm not actually sure if there really is any good research into what the true number killed would be, because Smyrna had a lot of refugees fleeing in and out of it during this period. The 100,000 figure seems to come from RJ Rummel, which makes me suspicious - it's far above the number provided by other historians (Richard Clogg writes 30,000, for what it's worth).
