When did English get rid of it’s vowel accents?

by ClayTheClaymore

I’m reading Beowulf in Old English and it has accents for its vowels, so I’m wondering when and why English got rid of them? I’ve heard of the Great Vowel Shift, does it have anything to do with it?

I assume you are referring to macrons (horizontal lines above vowels)? Those are a modern addition to academic editions of Old English texts, they were not actually used at the time. They mark the length of the vowel.

The great vowel shift is an unrelated process concerning how the vowels changed their pronunciation, not the way they were written.
