They seem unbelievably high. Would the numbers have been this high for the entirety of human settlement on the subcontinent? Animals are usually portrayed as some innocent things getting brutalised by people but these numbers seem the other way around. What was the general attitude towards the animals that commonly attacked people? Did it vary during different time periods in India?
I will recommend Jim Corbett’s “man eaters of kumaon” and “man eating leopard of rudraprayag” for accounts of wild cats that turned to humans to anyone wishing to get a start in this subject. These are excellent books in their own right and they do record the attitudes of the people faithfully. These books are, to the best of my knowledge, now free. Available on archive.org. I have enjoyed them since my teenage and I still go back to them from time to time.
