How influential was the role of the United States in the desicion of the French to end their occupation of Mexico in the 1860's?

I've read in some texts (US ones) that one of the major reasons the French left Mexico was due to the involvement of the US. How true is this claim?

Very much so. The U.S was always a supporter of Juarez and expressed strong opposition towards the Second Mexican Empire. When the Civil War was over, the U.S went ahead to mount economic pressures on France and to aid the Juarista rebels. This, along with conflicts with Prussia (which led to the Franco-Prussian War) proved to be too much for Napoleon to handle, causing him to retrieve French troops from Mexico and leave Maximilian with little support.
