I wrote a bit about Swedsh-Sami relations a few weeks ago.
On terminology, "Sapmi" is not the people, it's their country, i.e. Lapland. The term "Lapland" is not considered to be derogatory, and remains the official name of regions both in Sweden and Finland. Even the term "Lapp" wasn't/isn't really considered that derogatory in-itself, it was tainted by association to derogatory compounds like "lappjävel" and "fattiglapp". The term is more antiquated than offensive.
Some bits on the modern era Sami relations:
Eva Silvén, Constructing a Sami Cultural Heritage
Veli-Pekka Lehtola, Vanishing Lapps, progress in action. Finnish lappology and representations of the Sámi in publicity in the early 20th century
I ask because my 95-year-old maternal grandmother is half-Sami (immigrated to United States as a child) but refuses to discuss her family history.
