Pretty much in the title, what would the recommended reading for a layman to get well versed in Judaic history?
A great introductory book that I've recommended many times is Judaism: The Evolution of a Faith by Phillip Sigal.
There is, also, a recommended reading list at the /r/AskBibleScholars wiki here.
