Before European contact, what shape did the Polynesian peoples of the Pacific believe the world took?

by clepard

Was the world a globe? Was it flat? A dome? Did it have an edge?

Was it all one huge sea like the Pacific or did they know where there large continental landmasses?

What contact did they have with the land masses around them, around the Pacific ring of fire for instance?

Especially interested in the beliefs, myths and legends of what the world was like within the cultures of Polynesia and the Pacific predating European exploration and colonialism.

I read an article about the Maori and their exploration of the South Pacific. As a side point, it was stated that they knew the world was round from their observation of ocean-going canoes putting out to sea. Any vessel that sails straight out to sea appears to get lower in the water as in goes over the horizon till it vanishes. The conclusion that the earth was a globe was inescapable. All sea-faring peoples know this thing apparently. Certainly Ancient Greeks did.
