I'm about to finish the book and I still do not understand what Jünger means when he calls some of his soldiers "territorials"(including his orderly Vinke), they all have German names, so I'm not sure what he means by this phrase. Can anyone enlighten me?
This is a translation convention. Comparing the original German text to the English-language version, "territorial" is a substitute for the term "Landwehr" or the title "Landwehrmann." The Territorials of the British Army were a volunteer reserve force in the prewar UK. The soldiers who composed the prewar Territorial Army were regional-based units and the Territorial Army synthesized a number of British military traditions The Landwehr of the German Empire was not quite the same type of military organization as the Territorials, but they were akin in that the German units were territoriality-based peacetime formations meant to be a reserve for the main army.
