In regards to Australian troop movement and positions, there is no better source then Charles Bean’s Official History of Australia in the War of 1914-18. Bean was Australia’s Official war correspondent and historian and was present during every major action undertaken by Australian soldiers on Gallipoli and the Western Front. After the war, he set about writing Australia’s First World War history, working from contemporary resources and his own notes. The result is probably one of if not the most comprehensive official national histories of the First World War. There are twelve volumes, six of which were written by Bean himself. They set the bench mark for the writing of military history and chronicle the actions of Australia’s fighting men in immense detail down to the movements and dispositions of platoons and companies.
Best of all, all twelve volumes are accessible free of charge in PDF format from the Australian War Memorial website.
