When did the monogamous marriages occur in Europe and was it especially important for any class?

I'm thinking, to get out of serfdom or was it morse important for other parts of the society?

This is a question for /r/anthropology, because monogamous relationships among humans are much, much older than "serfdom" or any human historical period. The practice might even be older than homo sapiens, but again that would be a question for anthropologists or an evolutionary biologist.
