I’m currently doing some writing on a character who lived in Romania (in the Carpathian Mountains, respectively) from about 850 BCE to about 800 BCE. From what little I have been able to research on my own, I believe that this would be categorized as the “Urnfield Culture” period, and reading about that has been helpful because this character was heavily involved in the ritual sacrifice aspect of the culture, though even then its difficult to find work that really digs into the details of what that all entailed.
I basically want to know as much as humanly possible about this region, its people, customs, religion, military and day to day life during this time, but every time I search for something I can only ever find writings, at the earliest, from well into the CEs. I know its a difficult period to pin down specifics about, seeing as how they didn’t leave any written records that we know of (or at least, that I know of that we know of), but any help that can be given or any sources I might be able to refer to would be greatly appreciated.
The character is from an existing work, but a few writers/artists along with myself are planning on expanding his narrative and looking into his canonical origin. Here’s what we DO know about him from the preexisting canon:
Those are the essential bits we’re using to form this narrative, and thus the bits we need the most info on, but as I said earlier, literally ANYTHING on that 50 year period and/or anything preceding it that may have effected the conditions around that period would be massively appreciated.
Thank you! Please let me know if I can help clear anything up. :)
Hi there - we're happy to approve your question related to your novel, and we are happy for people to answer. However, we should warn you that many flairs have become reluctant to answer questions for aspiring novelists, based on past experience: some aspiring novelists have a tendency to try to pump historians for trivia while ignoring the bigger points they were making, while others have a tendency to argue with historians when the historical reality does not line up with what's needed for a particular scene or characterization. Please respect the answers of people who have generously given you their time, even if it's not always what you want to hear.
Additionally, as amazing as our flair panel is, we should also point out that /r/AskHistorians is not a professional historical consultation service. If you're asking a question here because you need vital research for a future commercial product such as a historical novel, you may be better off engaging a historical consultant at a fair hourly rate to answer these questions for you. We don't know what the going rate for consultancy work would be in your locality, but it may be worth looking into that if you have in-depth or highly plot-reliant questions for this project. Some /r/AskHistorians flairs could be receptive to working as a consultant in this way. However, if you wish for a flair here to do this work for you, you will need to organize this with them yourselves.
