I was reading a book about house care from the 60 and, the author, while listing monthly household expenses mentioned "radio expenses".
It would be helpful if you could clarify where the story is set. This is not my area of expertise, but I do know there is or was a licensing fee that TV and radio owners pay in the UK and other parts of Europe. I don't know the history, but for people who do, the location will be important.
