Tunis , the modern capital and largest city of Tunisia , used to be a small Berber settlement overshadowed by it’s neighboor Carthage , the Punic city-state . But which city was built first : Tunis or Carthage ?
This question can't be answered because Tunis has never been excavated with the intent of finding the earliest remains of the city. In order to be "older" than Carthage, that excavation would need to demonstrate settlement material from 900 BCE at least, which is about the best guess for the earliest settlement material from Carthage. It is possible that Tunis was occupied before this time, but very very unlikely. Tunis (Roman Thunī) was a bustling place under the Imperial Roman rule, but there is very little evidence of what came before.
