I wrote an aswer on European women in Spanish America just a few days ago. It deals more with when and how many arrived, but also goes into some roles women could play in society, and some of the restrictions they faced in the earlier 16th c. Brazil is outside my focus so I only go briefly into the - comparatively much smaller - emigration of Portuguese women, still hope it could be interesting!
