How did Teddy Roosevelt save American Football in the early 1900s?

by PsyRockFan21

I'm currently researching the beginning of college football from 1870s to 1910s for a capstone undergraduate class. The early stages of football were reported as brutal and barbaric. I was wondering if there were any primary resources on how Teddy Roosevelt tried to save the game. In 1903, 25 players died from football injuries. The 1905 season claimed 18 lives. Perhaps the most pivotal injury was a Harvard player, Teddy Roosevelt Jr. getting his face staved in. His dad, President Teddy Roosevelt, threatened to abolish football for its “brutality and foul play.” Did Theodore Roosevelt really save Football?

This forum has some specific rules about helping out with homework so you aren't going to get a long write up about Roosevelt's involvement, except to say that it was a very public debate.
