What is a "militia company" in 1770s United States?

An "ancestry hint" came up on a genealogy research website earlier, saying a person in my family tree was in the "Flower Swift Militia Company." I did a little googling but had trouble finding credible sources on what a "militia company" is, and even less on Flower Swift's.

In Colonial America most colonies required able bodied free men to be members of local militias. These men were part time irregular soldiers who were required to drill and train somewhat regularly and were supposed to protect their colonies and communities. They were generally required to provide their own firearms and other gear. These militia's were formed to protect against attacks by other European powers, pirates, slave uprisings, American Indians, and the like. Militias varied in quality and many had quite colorful names or were named after their commanding officer (Who I believe was generally elected from amongst the men). In the event of being used in combat generally the men would be recompensed for supplies or supplied by the Colonial governments (If they were lucky). Militia companies could vary greatly in quality from being excellent to being the equivalent of Frat Houses with muskets. Often in times of peace the Militia companies would decay in quality as men became more concerned with looking good in their uniforms then training to fight.
