How did Native North Americans handle crime and justice?

by bored-canadian

I'm inspired by a recent controversy in Canada where a person has been sentenced to a healing lodge. However, I understand that there is no monolithic 'native north american' culture, but are there any records in general?

Edit: Pre-European contact is the most interesting to me. Edit: Rereading my question, I want to clarify that I'm interested in any North American tribes, rather than just one tribe/region or another

Could you please specify a time frame? Native American reservations today have sovereign law enforcement forces, and we don't allow questions that deal with the most recent 20 years.
