Who are the real Macedonians?

by the_normal_person

In light of the recent developments with the Macedonian name change referendum, could someone provide some unbiased history about this whole issue? If the historic kingdom of Macedon was (mostly) in modern Greece, and ancient Macedonians were Greeks, why are ethnic Slavs called Macedonians who are not living in historic Macedon? Any insight would be appreciated.
