As my title references, I am looking for a reading list or other media that discusses revolutions. Specifically, what makes a revolution successful, what the world's revolutions have in common. They don't necessarily need to be political revolutions, I am also interested in the tipping point for social revolutions that make them effective. The more recent the better. Any suggestions?
An old classic would certainly be Crane Brinton's Anatomy of a Revolution. It's old ( 1938, updated 1965) and suffers from the same apples-to-oranges problem you get with the broad comparative studies that historians ( like Toynbee) once tended to do. For example, the American Revolution was not really that much like the Russian Revolution. But Brinton's ideas are still interesting, the text short and quite readable, and it's still in print.
