Apologies if this is the wrong place to ask, it just seemed right.
I AM writing an essay about SU involvement in services but more detail about this particular event wouldn't help me with it, I'm just interested. This SU movement happened 200yrs before the next similar SU event in the UK, and I'd love to know what primary evidence we have about it. All I can locate are numerous articles simply stating that it happened, but none that explore what on earth it was. Nothing about how we know it happened, who organised under that title, what their demands were, it's successes and failures, nada. I'm no historian, pls help me quench my thirst for knowledge
Thanks for the upvotes, guys! An update for anyone who's interested.
I kept looking and discovered a site that has claimed that this was a phantom reference which had no real basis, but since, the UK Parliment Archives released a document from 1675.
One John Taylor petitioned parliament to be released from Bethlem Hospital as he had been detained for Blasphemy. He argued that he was not insane and had not intended to be blasphemous. Two years later a patient named John Taylor was released from Bethlem Hospital.
While the disparity in the dates is still troubling and I would welcome any further contributions other redditors might have, I'm glad to have found something!
And ...honestly I've caused myself a bit of a problem. I am expected to include the 1620 reference in my essay, but I don't want to if I know it's meaningless. All I'd have to do is say "this 1620 thing happened" but it's intellectually dishonest and I don't like it.
I don't even have a reference for refuting it's existence. As historians, how would you tackle this?
Edit: a word
