One thing I'd add is that the popular understanding that Native Americans died mostly of disease doesn't comport with later scholarship, which points to disease as an important contributing factor to the larger genocide of native peoples -- disease destabilized societies and exacerbated the impact of wars, enslavement, etc -- but disease alone is not responsible for the near-depopulation of the Americas.
