Where would I be able to find information about a pre WW1 German regiment? I've tracked a number from a bayonet and been able to date it - but would like to know specifically about the (3rd Lower Silesian) Infantry.

I've hit the wall in terms of the internet.

Do you understand german? In this case http://genwiki.genealogy.net/IR_50 might be of interest for you, maybe also this book, especially Teil IV, Band 1:http://genwiki.genealogy.net/Milit%C3%A4r/Literatur/Handbuch_der_Verb%C3%A4nde_und_Truppen_des_deutschen_Heeres_1914_bis_1918

If not, a short overview:

It was founded 5.5.1860 as 10. kombiniertes Infanterie-Regiment (10. (prussian) combined Infantry Regiment) and was stationed in Breslau (Wroclav) and Öls (Olesnica). 4.7.1860 it was renamed to 3. Niederschlesisches Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 50 (3. Lower Silesian Infantery Regiment Nr. 50 [meaning it was the 50. prussian Infantry Regiment]).

In 1866 it was stationed in Posen (Poznan), 1871 in Rawitsch, Lissa and until 1881 also Ostrowo.

It fought as well in 1864 against Danmark as 1866 against Austria and 1870/71 against France.

In WW1 it was part of 10. Infantry Division.
