Hello, I'm trying to write a novella that takes place in the 1920s, but I want to be well educated on the time period before I write.
Other than the people who tried making their own alcoholic beverages (and dying because of it), how did people get alcohol during Prohibition?
Were there secret bars where you could get alcohol, or am I thinking too fictitiously? I understand that there was a lot of corruption with the law enforcement because not a lot of people were for this movement, but I still don't get the "how"s.
Thanks.
Note: This is a repost of a post I made a week ago that didn't get answered. If this is not allowed, I'll take it down.
Visit your library and get a copy of Daniel Okrent's Last Call: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition (Scribner, 2010). It's the best single book for a layperson to read on prohibition and includes lots of details on this-- more than you'd need --while also being a really good read. Alternatively you could watch the Ken Burns documentary Prohibition, which is based on the book so includes a lot of the same material.
