Historical Analysis as a Method

by doppler-radar

So I am assessing a diplomatic cable from a British envoy to a then independent Bavaria in 1866. I was asked to "how could I use this source in a form of historical analysis?"

What exactly is meant by historical analysis?

Would it just be stating why the source is relevant? Or why it is accurate? I understand that historical analysis itself has some kind of methodology of its own, but every website I try to look at for more information says that I am not privy to those files. Any guidance would be appreciated.

Honestly, I would ask your teacher for some guidance first of all.

What I personally would do with no other instructions is talk about what kinds of things I could use that source for/what questions I could answer with it. That would involve talking a little bit about the background of the source, whether we can take it at face value/potential biases, and so forth.

But that's just me, and I am not the one grading this.
