I found this in an envelope in an old photo album being junked at work[1933 Alcatraz Prison rollcall.] (https://imgur.com/gallery/hb74Mca). I just want to know who they are to find out why they were there.
So Alcatraz didn't become a Federal Penitentiary until August 1934, before that it was used as a military fort and then later a military prison.
The date on that roll call of August 17 1933 means those prisoners were actually US military prisoners and were there just a couple of months before Alcatraz stopped being a military prison in October 1933.
So now we know they were service men how do we find out who they were? In 2004 the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) and the Department of Defense (DoD) made all Official Military Personnel Files (OMPF) permanent records of the US. All OMPF transfer from DoD property to NARA property 62 years after the end of service for the individual.
This means the records of the people on that roll call should be held by the NARA and can be requested by the public. However according to the NARA website as well as their service numbers they need additional information such as full name, dates of service, branch of service, date of birth.
Obviously these aren't available from that roll call, however it wouldn't hurt to contact the NARA as they would be best placed to tell if they can help and if not where else you may be able to look.
