Here’s what I’ve been told. My family is from Lebanon, but the story is that they were originally from Syria near the town of modern Aleppo on a mountain called mount sumac (Jbl sumac - like the spice.) My family said they left after a war between the community they were living in and modern day Turkey. It was a monarchy of sorts and there was a king who ruled it. They fought but eventually Turkey defeated them and made them sign an agreement to leave the area. My family is very insistent that they did not live in Aleppo (Halab at the time I believe) itself, but it was the closest big city because their city was not well known outside of the area.
I cannot find any mention of a war near Aleppo, or even a mount sumac. My family says none of the names of the mountains around Aleppo I’ve found online are the right ones. The timing may be off but they told me it was around the late 19th century.
Does anyone know anything about a war that happened between a city/community near Aleppo in Syria and Turkey? I’ve searched all over in English and in my limited Arabic but have found no leads.
Jabal Summaq is in the Harim Mountains along the border in Idlib province. About 20 miles west of Aleppo. They're small, rural towns that are fairly well known for their (former) Druze population (there also just happened to be a Ottoman-Druze war at the time but in southern Syria...). I hope that can assist.
