Hi everyone, recently i have been listening to Dan Carlin's Blueprint for Armageddon and was inspired to look into the history of my family during the war. My uncle brought me several photos of My Great Grandfather during his time serving in WW1 for the German Army. Unfortunately other than serving on the Western front at either Ypres or the Somme (possibly both) we know very little about his time in the war. Any help in identifying where he was/what unit he served in would be greatly appreciated by my entire family. For reference we currently live in Canada after my Great Grandfather migrated to Manitoba shortly before World war 2 broke out, originally my Grandfather was from Munich.
Regardless i hope everyone enjoys the Photos as they are fairly good quality by my understanding.
He is leading both infantry columns in the photos!
(edit: he is also the soldier being presented to who i am guessing is the Kaiser)
Knowing that he is (possibly Bavarian) from Munich, he maybe been in the 1st Bavarian Corps likely the 1st Royal Bavarian Division which was located in Munich. I cannot really figure out which unit this was, but I can get some clue from the first picture, which is an inspection of an infantry division by Kaiser Wilhelm II along with Crown Prince Wilhelm and the staff, but I’m not sure if that soldier is part of the unit of his.
Are you able to clarify more details, such as medals, rank or anything else?
Hello there! As your question is related to looking for identification/information regarding military personnel, our Guide on Military Identification may be of use to you. It provides a number of different resources, including how to request service records from a number of national agencies around the world, as well as graphical aids to assist in deciphering rank, unit, and other forms of badges or insignia. While the users here may still be able to lend you more assistance, hopefully this will provide a good place to start!
