Regarding a potential research topic: Cross Comparison of Norse Invasion with Muslim Conquest of Spain

by henryalvarez2

Before I explain, my question is whether or not the Northmen established any sort of political hold within Anglo Saxon England that could constitute as a Kingdom.

I want to write a paper comparing the Norse invasion of England with the Muslim conquest of Spain focusing mainly on how the invasions and contact between the two groups formulated ( on a small scale) a blending of cultures and identities even after the expulsion of both groups from the invaded territory. My main concern for such a topic is that in Iberia, the Cordoban Caliphate held control for the better part of 500 years making politics, identity, and culture much more complex than Anglo Saxon England. Which is why I ask if anything lose to a Kingdom was established by the Norsemen, as much as I'd like to pursue this topic if the Vikings merely just raided and held on to key cities/towns without formulating something more centralized then such a topic would be harder to pursue. I hope I've been clear, I am attempting to ask the question before I've delved into the sources primarily to ensure that such an effort wont be futile. This is also my first post so I hope I haven't broken any guidelines.

Hey! I’ve actually done a bit of research on both the formation of the British cultural identities prior to 1066 and on the convivencia in 13th century Spain, so somewhat adjacent to both of the periods you’re talking about. I think it would be a fantastic subject to compare, though you may want to be more specific regarding both the particular periods and participating groups in the norse invasion and re: the region of Iberia and specific period you’re studying for the Moorish invasions. I would say the main drawback of the comparison or contrast you’ve proposed would be more the scale and variety of elements it encompasses more than a difference in the general subjects themselves.

Edit: and to your question on Norse kingdoms, it really does depend on what groups and eras of invasion you’re asking about. Many of the anglo saxon holdings themselves were tied to norse rulers, and the term Viking lends itself to some level of interpretation given that so many of the waves of invasions were germanic tribes (and there’s also the question of displacement vs. cultural exchange if you really want to dig into that)
