Hi, I'm looking for books with the greatest amount of detail on the 2nd World War. I want minutiae, specific manoeuvres, etc. George Herring's 'From Colony to Superpower: U.S. Foreign Relations since 1776' is comparable to what I'm looking for.
(If this is not the appropriate place to ask for book recommendations, you have my sincere apologies)
The AskHistorians Booklist section on WW2 would be a great place to start! A number of the books listed deal with the nuts and bolts of operations and/or hardware.
For example, Kaigun, listed under "Naval Operations" is a very detailed study on the creation and rise of the Imperial Japanese Navy from the 1887 to 1941. If you want to know why the IJN designed their heavy cruisers the way they did, you'll find out. The spin-off book, Sunburst, does the same with the IJN's air component.
Take a look and read the descriptions... you'll probably discover quite a few titles that'll fit your desires! I know I have.
