When did different methods of birth control become known about and used by civilians?

I know there have been some folk 'remedies' for unwanted pregnancy throughout history (both prevention and termination), but I'm wondering how well these things worked, what they were, and how they were communicated about. Was it something only certain people knew about? Or more like an open secret? (If even a secret?) How would someone have sought out information on things like this in different societies? (And economic classes?) How was abortion treated socially, by who? (And who administered the actual abortions?) What was accessibility to these things like (were they expensive, etc)?

I'm curious about this in terms of more modern times in the English-speaking world, mainly the Georgian era to the Edwardian era.

This doesn’t get at the whole question (or the English-speaking world) but you might find my previous answer about contraception in 18th and 19th Century France helpful.
