Question from a student

by argapooder

Hi reddit,
I am studying a unit at university regarding myth in ancient Greece, and came upon this quote in one of my lecture slides.
"Traditional stories which are neither true nor probable" (regarding myth)

"[Cicero] Rhetorica ad Herennium 1.13"

I was trying to find the actual part of Rhetorica ad Herennium in which this is said, however I was having trouble.

When referencing ancient historical texts, what does the "1.13" mean in the above reference? It's something I've seen a fair bit in reference to ancient historians and ancient sources.

I am studying remotely so asking questions like this to my lecture are quite difficult.

Thanks for your help.

1.13 refers to book 1, section 13 (you can find the text here, scroll down to find the little red 13 in the text).

For ancient texts we can't use page numbers because there are so many different editions and printings that they never match up. Convention has established other numbering systems that (should) remain consistent across all different versions. It takes a little getting used to, but you'll get there in the end!
