The most relevant and comprehensive recent work is J. Roisman's Alexander's Veterans and the Early Wars of the Successors (2012). It specifically traces the disintegration of Alexander's army into rival factions and the character and support base of the leaders that sprung up to fill the vacuum. For a slightly longer view, try E.M. Anson's Alexander's Heirs: The Age of the Successors (2014) or A.B. Bosworth's The Legacy of Alexander (2005).
