"The Bridge on the Drina", by Ivo Andric, is a work of historical fiction which covers the period you're asking about, and which won it's author the Nobel prize. "Land Without Justice", by Milovan Djilas, describes everyday life during that period in Montenegro (across the border from Bosnia). It's a wonderfully descriptive autobiography which vividly describes the everyday life of rural Montenegrins.
