So I'm interested in how a wealthy person from the 19th century would go about getting foreign currency. Without the internet and speedy transportation it feels like this would be more difficult to come by. What's more, Germany was still not united in the 1840s, and I want to know if every different state had a different currency.
I can’t answer this question, but I have a question of my own. I think the economic entity for the time OP is asking about is the German Confederation (Deutscher Bund). I know it was a mainly economic group, but I was wondering how much of an effect it had on the path to German political unification, and why Austria became increasingly separated from the German identity.
