When a town or city creates a wall, aren't they 'locking' themselves in a set area? How did historical settlements especially in ancient Rome grow as they created more walls? Did they simply just build outside the wall? Was this a common practice?
They broke it down to sanctions. The peasants, atleast in ancient Greece I think. Mostly surrounded the main most wealthy areas. It went, a lot like it is today, just more visual then, the wealthiest people were in n the middle, surrounded by mid class. Than surrounded by lower class. If Greece wasn't set up that way, I apologize. I do know some civilizations were set up that way.
