I'm working on learning the history of the regions of historical/modern Germany and I'm looking for some good books on specific topics:
30 Years War, Rise of Prussia, German territories during the Napoleonic wars, German Confederation, German revolutionary movements in the mid-1800's, German Unification
Also a book or volume of books that cover the history of the historical/modern German regions from as early as possible (Roman contact?) to the modern era, would also be awesome! Thank you in advance!
Hi there! With regards to the rise of Prussia and German unification I'd recommend you give Christopher Clark's Iron Kingdom a look. It's one of the only English language general histories of Prussia and is excellently written.
I'd also recommend David Blackbourn's History of Germany 1780-1918 for a good general overview.
If you're looking for a biography of Bismarck then there's many to look at but in particular I'd recommend Jonathan Steinberg's biography which is a very in-depth work. Just ignore anything he says about Hitler.
Hopefully someone else can give you recommendations for earlier on but these are the books I'd recommend for the modern period.
