Did Russian Orthodox Christianity just spring back to life, or were its believers simply allowed to speak up about it after the USSR fell?

I can’t find much straight forward information out there about this, but I’d love to know how the Russian Orthodox Church was so incredibly revived after (apparently) being utterly wiped out with the rise of communism. Are the modern priests all converts since the fall of communism? Or were they simply allowed to admit their faith? Have there been government programs assisting the Orthodox Church in Russia grow? How is it doing so well since it’s apparent destruction? Is this a controversial subject depending on who you ask? Thank you so much in advance! I truly know so little about the subject and would love to know more.

There are many converts, and people who kept the faith quietly. But there are also many writers who inspired a revival. There's an American monk who wrote many books that the Russians loved and published many times over by the name of Father Seraphim Rose. Monastacism and monastic elders in Russia, Romania, and other slavic countries also helped spread Orthodoxy again.

I'm about to go to sleep, but I'll recommend some books and other resources in the morning
