What is the full history of the "September=Ninth Month" discontinuity?

by iorgfeflkd

I have heard various explanations of why the ninth through twelfth months of the year are named for the seventh through tenth. These include Julius and Augustus Caesar injecting new months into the year (which doesn't make sense because there are twelve lunar cycles in a solar year), that the new year used to start in March instead of January, and things about older calendars with ten months but a lot of intercalary days. What's the complete history of this calendar switch that lead to the months getting misnamed, and how was it initially received?
