I should preface this by saying that is have 0 tolerance for anykind of racism/sexism this is genuine curiousness so although hard please try to stay as objector as possible. What does the confederate flag mean? Why do people today still have bumper stickers and other things of it?

I was sitting in English class really bored so I was looking around the room and there was a girl who had a sticker of the confederate flag on her laptop. At first I was a little mad, but as I thought about it more and more I started thinking maybe there is more to it than meets the eyes. I am not well informed on the civil war at all so I thought maybe I am missing something but, I was taught was that the confederate flag is a symbol of hate. I was wondering if there is there any positive connotations to it? Is there any positive reason why someone would have a bumper sticker of it?

Not to discourage additional conversation or posts, but you may find the responses to this question on the relationship between the flag and patriotism helpful, especially the responses by u/DBHT14 and u/The_Alaskan and this AMA with John Coski, author of The Confederate Battle Flag: America's Embattled Emblem.

There are people who have been taught that the Confederate flag inaccurately stood for state rights or land rights. The Confederate flag has often been taught as representing something different in order to hide, very thinly, the inherent racism that everyone else recognizes and understands.

There may be younger generations who believe the nonsense about a general idea of states rights and who dont question what rights specifically people actually mean.
