What's the story of slavery in the UK?

by unknowinglyderpy

The history of racial segregation in the States is well documented and after seeing this TIL post on the front page I just realized that i know close to nothing about how slavery and segregation was handled in the UK. Like:

-Was it even as widespread in England/ The UK as it was in america?

-When was slavery outlawed?

-And how did the people react?

There was also slavery in what is today the UK and Ireland in the Middle Ages, before 1066 and before the Roman invasion of Britain. There are previous questions about slavery in the British Isles here and here, with extensive references provided by /u/textandtrowel. There is no one "story of slavery" in Britain -- it goes back thousands of years.

See, for example:

Bromberg, Erik I, "Wales and the Mediaeval Slave Trade," Speculum 17, no. 2 (Apr., 1942): 263-269.

This is a pretty good post by /u/agentdcf on when and why did the slave trade get banned by Britain and the people's reaction toward slavery
