How did the Meitei in Manipur become Hindu and was there resistance to this process?

The state of Manipur appears to be an anomaly in the Northeast of India where an indigenous group is majority Hindu. How is this the case?

The King during the time of the 18 century accepted hinduism as the main religion, either out of fear or he lost the war with the Indians. Of course there was resistance throughout history but its very hard to find actual sources. I am half methei and I would go to Manipur to find for sure. I am from the states and I know absolutely nothing about the land of my moms side. They were never part of India and cant get their independence.
