Did everyone in the past have Fetal Alcohol Syndrome?

by New-Backwood

Is it safe to assume that most people in the past had Fetal Alcohol Syndrome? As far as I understand, at least in the west, people used to drink a lot. Certainly they didn't know that drinking while pregnant was harmful. I've often heard that there wasn't a lot of clean water in Europe after Rome, and so they drank mostly weak beer. Is this true?

In the east they drank tea and probably did not have this problem, no?
